Agogo chicken wrap

Agogo chicken wrap

Agogo wraps appeared in Woolworths at the start of 2024, at the time it was three flavours, including this Mexican chicken wrap. Convenient savoury foods pretty much disappear when you’re gluten free, so finding more options is always a huge win.

It’s been a few months since I’ve reviewed a savoury product. It’s definitely something my Facebook followers want to see more of so I will endeavour to do more in the future.

About Agogo

The first products Agogo got into stores were the three wraps. Besides the Mexican chicken wrap Agogo also offered a spinach and ricotta and a pumpkin and feta wrap.

Around May 2024 Agogo launched a range of dehydrated meals, where all you need is boiling water and time.

In fact, they are also stocked on Virgin Australia and Jetstar flights. You can see the range of flavours on my gluten free ready meal guide to Woolworths.

Then in August two new flavours of their wraps appeared in the gluten free freezer section of Coles, chickpea korma and Thai chicken.

All the Agogo products have a good health star rating and the company is focussed on sustainability, and manufacture their products in Australia.

Preparing the Agogo chicken wrap

I had so many tips on how to prepare these to ensure a warm centre and a crispy exterior. Can I remember any of them? Nope! 😅

So instead I followed the packet instructions which were to microwave for three and a half minutes.

I already had the oven on for another bake so I popped it in there for five minutes to crisp it up.

The wrap ended up with a few cracks but thankfully there’s more than one layer so there wasn’t any risk of it falling apart.

The taste

The wrap (pastry?) itself is pretty decent, it’s super thin and flexible (where it’s not crispy). I think it may be similar to the South Indian dosa, in that it is made of primarily chickpea flour (it also uses buckwheat, potato and tapioca).

When I first saw these in the supermarket I thought it was actually an omelette wrap! Which is a real thing! I ate one in the UK!

The filling is really nice, it’s a mix of rice, kidney beans, chicken and corn. There’s a decent amount of chicken in there and the pieces are tender.

I thought it would be loaded with rice but it isn’t, which is kind of good given that’s the cheapest ingredient. 😂

The wrap filling is spiced, but not spicy. In terms of flavour it reminds me of the Amy’s kitchen frozen burrito (which I believe is now discontinued).

The verdict

As a work from home blogger and a stay at home mum, I really don’t need to buy this again. I’ve got a whole pantry and massive freezer to raid for food.

Okay, I have to fight my toddler for it, but I’ve got options. 😅

If I was working in an office and forgot my lunch, this would work. I know I microwaved it and then put in the oven, but I think it would be absolutely fine just microwaved.

At 145g it’s not the biggest meal though, so either some food on the side like a salad or something to round out the meal like a yoghurt would be ideal.

While researching the Agogo website I saw the phrase “move over sausage rolls.” This is quite clever really as the serving size is pretty similar.

If I had a choice between these wraps and a sausage roll I’d be picking the wrap.

Don’t get me wrong, I love a sausage roll, but if I ate one as a meal on it’s own I would feel pretty bogged down by the high fat content within an hour or so.

Where to buy Agogo chicken wrap

The first time I saw this brand was in Woolworths and it’s where you will find this Mexican-style chicken wrap. They are in the freezer section with party foods like mini pies and samosas.

However, around August 2024 Coles brought in two additional flavours, chickpea korma and Thai chicken. Both of which are typically located in the gluten free freezer section.
