Heinz Soup of the Day Chicken Paella

Posted: June 3, 2025 Updated: June 3, 2025
Wow, it’s been about two years since I did a soup review so I’ve decided to get back into it with Heinz Soup of the Day chicken paella. I came across this soup while working on my gluten free soup guide which has over 100 soup options, all coeliac safe – no may contains.
We’re creatures of habit in our house, or rather I am and I’m the one who does all the shopping. So generally if soup is on the menu for lunch then it’s a tin of the classic Heinz tomato soup.
I do however like packet soup as an opportunity to try something different without committing to making several litres of soup that I’m stuck with for the week.
Heinz Spanish style chicken paella soup
The soup is a bit over 430g and you’d need to get a big bowl to heat it in the microwave. You cannot heat the soup in the pouch in the microwave – it’s made of foil!
I heated mine on the stove, it warmed through while I toasted some bread to go on the side.
It’s quite a thick soup and I found myself needing to stir it regularly as I was worried it would settle at the bottom and could begin to burn.

The taste
The soup has a very rich tomato taste as the main flavour. The soup is much thicker than say Heinz Big Red, it is obvious that a thickener has been used. Looking at the ingredients they have used corn flour (listed as corn starch).
You can see pieces of vegetables in the soup but when you’re eating it you can’t really tell what they are because they are so soft and overcooked. I know that sounds a bit negative, but I think it comes down to your preferences. If you want a lot of varied texture in your soup you might be out of luck here. Even the celery was super soft.
There’s a few beans in there including kidney beans, they are quite soft as but there’s still a bit of texture left in them. I didn’t find many in my bowl, perhaps they ended up in my husband’s as it lists 7% kidney beans. There are visible pieces of chicken, they are mid way between soft and firm.

If I had to relate the flavour to another product I’d say it’s got a similar palate to a salsa or a Mexican enchilada filling.
Despite the jalapeño in the ingredients I wouldn’t say it is spicy. There is perhaps the slightest hint of spice however our daughter ate it without issue.
The upgrade
No upgrades on my soup today but here’s what I’d do if I knew I was hungry or wanted to increase the protein. If there were some leftover cooked chicken or pork pieces in the fridge they would work quite.
However, if it was purely a pantry meal I think a small tin of chickpeas like the Edgell ones in olive oil would go down a treat in this.
As I was writing this up I realised another upgrade option that would be delicious – a dollop of sour cream!
The verdict
This is a nice soup! Long life products always have me a bit cautious, only because some of the flavours in them can be rather flat or one dimensional.
I was quite happy with this though, and it’s made me keen to try out more flavours in the Soup of the Day range. I think I’d stick to sharing the soup between two and having some nice bread or toast on the side.
Where to buy Heinz chicken paella soup
You can buy this soup from Woolworths in the soup aisle and also on Amazon (affiliate link). I thought it was at Coles as well but when I did a quick search it was listed as unavailable, I’ll try and follow that up soon.
Let me know if you’ve seen it at IGA stores and I’ll update this section.
