Leda Chickn Cracker Miniz

Ever since I heard of the Leda Chickn Cracker Miniz I had just one thought, “Do they taste like a gluten free Arnott’s Chicken Crimpy?”

I’ll be honest with you, until a year or so ago on I had no idea what a Chicken Crimpy was. 😅

It kept coming up so often on Facebook posts that I had to look it up and discovered it’s a Shapes flavour! Sorry Chicken Crimpy fans, I was solidly a pizza or BBQ Shapes fan growing up.

I haven’t seen many people talk about it since, but I now have the opportunity, with the help of some gluten-eating taste testers, to discover if they really are alike.

About Chickn Cracker Minis

Leda are a gluten free brand based in Queensland. They’re more known for their sweet biscuit range that includes choc chip, and my favourites gingernut and mint slice.

As the name suggests the biscuits are quite small, you’d need about five of them to get close to one Chicken Crimpy.

But the key benefit is the ingredients. Besides being gluten free they are also dairy free, egg free and plant based.

Right now you can only buy the Leda Chickn Cracker Minis in a six pack of lunchbox size bags. Great if you’ve got kids or no self control, less helpful for taking to a party. Unless you’re the only coeliac, which by all means just cater to yourself and don’t share.

The taste

Reviewer 1 (me): These have the same texture as GF shapes. Flavour wise I think it’s the right amount, you bite in and the salt and flavour hit your tongue. There’s naturally a bit of variance between biscuits with some having more seasoning than others.

No chance of mixing these up!

Reviewer 2 (the bestie): In terms of texture, she’s not the biggest fan of the Leda, feels it a bit floury, likely due to the tapioca starch.

“Comparing the two, the Shapes have a punchy flavour that’s very strong while the Leda are much lighter.

Leda on their own might be okay, but overall less flavour. And less salt, there’s definitely more salt on the Chicken Crimpy.”

Reviewer 3 (the husband): He thinks the biscuits are similar but admits he doesn’t have a refined palate. Like the bestie he also noticed the texture of the tapioca starch.

After a five minute break reviewers 2 and 3 tried the Leda biscuits again and found them to be improved. They concluded that the Chicken Crimpy are so overpowering in flavour (and MSG) that it’s hard to pick up the taste of anything afterwards.

If Leda were offered to them, they would both would eat them again.

Thoughts on nutrition and price comparison

The saltiness was a key difference during the taste testing and it prompted me to look at the nutrition panel for each one.

It was a little bit mind blowing.

In Chicken Crimpy the sodium content is a whopping 866mg per 100g. That’s even more than Smiths Chicken Chips which are 498mg per 100g.

Compare that to the Leda Chickn Minis which are 290mg per 100g. I just did the math and that’s almost exactly 1/3 of what’s in Chicken Crimpy (290 x 3 is 870).

Couple this with the fact that Chicken Crimpy contains MSG (I don’t mind it but I know many avoid it) there’s a definite case for the benefits in the Leda Cracker Miniz.

As I mentioned earlier, it’s also egg free, dairy free and plant based.

Just on the salt alone though, I know what I’d be choosing for my kid’s lunchbox (or my own).

Coming back to the price, gluten free is always going to cost a bit more. The price is about $6 for six packets (150g in total), while regular shapes are $5 for 8 mini packets (200g).

Comparatively that’s $4 per 100g versus $2.50 per 100g. Not the best, not the worst.

Nice little lunchbox-ready packets

Where to buy Leda Chickn Cracker Miniz

The best option to buy these tasty crackers is through Happy Tummies. Why? Because they sell loads of other excellent gluten free products, including Chocorama – gluten free Milo.

I don’t buy online often, so I always feel the pain of shipping costs. So if I’m going to do it, I go all in. If you’re wondering what I recommend at Happy Tummies it’s easy, their lollies. They are GF, vegan and delicious. Genuinely, strawberries and cream are better than anything you miss by Allen’s.

Alternatively the Leda crackers are stocked at selected IGAs and independent grocers. They are not sold in Coles or Woolworths.
