Equipment

  • 2 Egg rings
  • 1 Frying pan

Ingredients

  • 1 egg
  • 1 sausage or 60 - 70g sausage meat (2.5oz)
  • 1 English muffin see article or notes on where to buy gluten free English muffins
  • 1 slice cheese optional

Instructions

  • Remove the skin from your sausage and shape the meat into a circular patty. You can use the egg ring to help guide the shape. Tip: if the mix is particularly sticky, wetting your hands can help stop the meat from sticking to your skin.
  • Place the patty in the egg ring on a preheated frying pan and cook on medium heat. If required using a spatula or spoon to carefully press the patty into shape. It may shrink a little but this is fine.
  • After three or four minutes or when the patty is looking cooked, carefully turn it over.
  • Place your second egg ring in the pan and crack the egg into the ring. For a typical McDonalds style egg, use your spatula / egg flip to break the yolk. This creates an even shape and evenly cooked egg.
  • While the egg and sausage are cooking cut open your English muffin and put it in the toaster.
  • Cook the egg to your liking, to retain the circular shape you will need to cook it to well done and flip it once.
  • Remove the muffin from the toaster, adding a slice of cheese.
  • Once the egg and sausage are done remove them from the pan. If the sausage is particularly oily, place it on a piece of paper towel to remove the excess oil.
  • Layer the sausage patty and the egg on the bun, top with your favourite sauce and the top of the bun.
  • Enjoy!

Notes

English muffins are available at supermarkets around Australia and many parts of the world. For a gluten free English muffin I recommend Lifestyle Bakery, these are the best I've tried. Lifestyle bakery is also sold under the Coles range 'I'm free from' and is available in most Coles stores. Woolworths also stocks a gluten free English muffin.
Ironically in the UK gluten free English muffins are a bit trickier to find. BFree definitely made them back around 2020 but I haven't seen them in stock in UK supermarkets. Let me know in the comments if you know where to get these!
In the US, Katz, Canyon, Udi's and Kinnikinnick all make gluten free English muffins. I haven't tried any of these but from the photos they look authentic.
