Ajinomoto gluten free dumplings

New gluten free gyoza (dumplings) are available at Woolworths by Japanese brand Ajinomoto. They arrived in select Woolworths stores in late 2024, but it was several months before I saw them. This was partially due to a Woolworths strike and due to the fact my store listings were wrong – my local doesn’t stock them!

But luckily I was in the right place at the right time and recently grabbed a packet while it was on sale.

Gluten free dumplings are easy if you know where to look

There are actually a lot more gluten free gyoza and dumplings options than Ajinomoto and what you’ll find in the main two supermarkets.

So many in fact that I made a guide to all the gluten free dumplings in Australia. Definitely bookmark that page for your next dumpling feast.

Finding gluten free gyoza and dumplings

Hidden away, not in the gluten free freezer, but the Asian grocery freezer is where you’ll find Ajinomoto gyoza.

It comes in a packet of 12, which is more than other supermarket brands that provide just 8 pieces.

Preparing the dumplings

I have to admit I was a bit nervous I’d stuff up the preparation of these dumplings. To the point that while I was taking photos I opted not to share them to my Instagram stories live. 😅

It’s always a risk trying something new and posting about it before you’re done… suddenly you go quiet because it turned into a disaster.

Luckily there were no dramas here at all. It worked beautifully with the clear photo instructions on the back of the packet.

The preparation of the dumplings is quite unique in that it requires no oil and no water. You simply place the gyoza in the pan, put the lid on and start cooking.

The taste

The dumpling wrapper is one of the best we’ve had. It’s delicate and soft. Not sticky or claggy like some gluten free dumplings.

The lattice makes for a great contrasting texture, it’s so light and crispy. Flavour wise there’s not much going on with the lattice – but it is just starch.

The filling is finely chopped and despite it being mostly cabbage I’m not really noticing it. In fact some of the filling has a distinctly meaty texture.

Looking at the ingredients it will be the granulated soy protein. Some of you might recognise that as TVP, textured vegetable protein, which is typically made of soy.

For those unfamiliar it has a texture a little like mince meat.

The verdict

These are absolutely lovely. I was a bit unsure how I’d feel about vegetarian dumplings, as some I’ve had in the past had unusual fillings like black fungus or corn.

I’d definitely buy these again, especially if I was looking for a vegetarian dumpling.

The price per dumpling / weight is also a lot cheaper than competitors like Mr Chen’s which is $9 for 8 dumplings. These are $9.95 for 12 dumplings.

Where to buy Ajinomoto gluten free gyoza

I remember seeing these in a Japanese grocery store in Sydney as far back as 2022. In late 2024 the gyoza became available in select Woolworths stores.

If you have a look at the Umami foods product page you can see a list of stockists, alternatively you can use the stock checker on the Woolworths website.

I imagine they’re also in some Asian grocery stores but I haven’t seen them in any near me.
