Katz gluten free donut holes

Katz gluten free donut holes

More gluten free donuts, or rather donut holes, thank you Katz! I remember the excitement and hype when Katz first launched in Australia back in 2022.

People were so keen to find them I actually dedicated my review of the Katz donuts page to helping people locate them. Listing every store that they’d been seen in around the country. It was hectic.

Thankfully these days you can easily look up the location of a product at Woolworths using the stock finder option on their website.

This is post sponsored by Katz Gluten Free Australia & NZ. As you’ve no doubt seen, I’m candid in my posts. I’m not going to tell you something is great if it isn’t.

If you like, you can read more about how Kati Keksi is funded, and how you can support my work.

I can’t recall how long we waited last time, between hearing about these new donuts from the US and finally finding a box.

This time around it’s been just under a month, I shared a post on my Facebook feed May 1st and found a box in store May 30th.

If you haven’t found a box for yourself yet, don’t fret – at the bottom of this review is information to help you find them.

About Katz

You’d be surprised to learn that Katz is actually a super young brand. If you’ve ever come across the full range on their website you’ll see its massive (available only in the US).

Like most gluten free businesses Katz started with a mother wanting to provide coeliac safe treats for her children. That was 2006, and by 2014 they had a certified manufacturing facility.

All the Katz products are gluten free, dairy free, and free from tree nuts, peanuts and sesame. According to the website their products are also preservative free (which is why they are sold frozen).

Over in Australia we’re just super lucky that an importer decided to give Katz a go in the US market. Clearly the Katz glazed donuts were a success and that’s lead to us getting these donut holes.

Preparing Katz donut holes

Similar to the Katz glazed donuts you have two options to prepare the donut holes. The first is to let it defrost naturally on the bench for an hour and the second is to heat in the microwave.

I will note, the microwave option is still recommended even if you choose to defrost. In fact, they state defrosting followed by microwaving gives the best results.

To be thorough, I did both for a side by side comparison – thankfully my kid was napping and my husband was in meetings so the donut holes were safe on the bench while I waited.

In the end I had the first group on the bench for 45 minutes which did allow the donut holes to thaw sufficiently.

I heated the thawed donut holes and the frozen ones, the thawed batch needed 20 seconds (4 donut holes) and the frozen batch needed 30 seconds.

The donuts come out hot! 30 seconds for the frozen ones resulted in piping hot donut holes, I wouldn’t give them to a kid right away.

The taste

The from frozen donuts came out the softest, perhaps from the five seconds additional time. The exterior of the donut holes was a little too squishy if that makes sense? But firmed up after a minute or so.

The donut holes are light and soft, you can see from the photo below they’ve got an airy texture and a thin fried exterior. The balance of cinnamon sugar around the outside is spot on. There’s no graininess in the dough either, often a tell-tale GF sign.

These feel like a proper donut treat!

Next time I make them I think I’ll microwave for thirty seconds then give them three minutes in a hot oven / air fryer to see if I can achieve a crispy crunch on the exterior.

In my view, there’s no need to defrost them first, just go straight to the microwave.

The verdict

These are really good. Of course nothing is going to compare to fresh donut holes straight out of a deep fryer and tossed into waiting sugar.

But, we’re not really here to compare fresh versus frozen.

There are now three frozen gluten free donut products on the market, I’ve tried all three and I think the Katz donut holes are the best one.

We don’t have a GF donut business near us, so if I was really craving a hot cinnamon donut this is what I’d opt for.

Where to buy Katz donut holes

The Katz gluten free donut holes are stocked exclusively at Woolworths. However, you won’t find them in all stores (for example, my local doesn’t have them).

What I’d recommend is using the stock checker on the Woolworths website so see which stores near you have the Katz donut holes. All you need to do is pop in your postcode and a list of stores nearby will show up. It’s not the best system, sometimes you need to try typing in a few neighbouring suburbs.

A quick note on the price, when I was on their US site I saw the price is US$5.29 – at the current exchange rate that is AU$8.19. So we’re only paying 31 cents more to get them all the way over here in Australia.
