Gluten Free Lollies at Coles

Over the last year I’ve had a few requests for a supermarket lolly guide with everything that’s gluten free. Honestly, it’s a pretty big job, this guide has taken about 20 hours of work (research, label reading, photos, uploads, web design). But, enough complaining – in April I noticed Coles has an own brand range of lollies which are cheap and yes – gluten free!

I shared the news and that got more than a few folks excited over on Facebook!

Following that post a few people asked if I had any guides to gluten free lollies at Coles. That lead me to asking the question to my followers, which got a biiiig response all saying “Yes please!”

How to use this guide

This guide is going to cover lollies, and chocolate, that are gluten free and able to be purchased at Coles supermarkets.

I’m going to list brands in alphabetical order for easy navigation. Everything on the list will be gluten free, and I’ll do my best to disclose all allergens. If it’s dairy free (no dairy, no may contain), I’ll make sure to write it in the text so you can use the search function on your browser.

Glucose syrup

Glucose syrup made from wheat, often listed in ingredients as glucose syrup (wheat), is suitable for coeliacs. Further, according to the Royal Children’s Hospital in Melbourne, glucose syrup from wheat is also suitable for those with wheat allergy.

There’s only nine products (out of 120+) on this guide that contain wheat glucose syrup and they are all clearly the labelled. So if you have a wheat allergy and you are unsure you can easily identify and avoid these.

The list!

Allen’s

• Freckles, 160g, 340g. Allergens: Milk, soy. May contain: Tree nuts.
• Kool Mints, 140g. Allergens: Nil. May contain: Nil.

Cadbury

There aren’t many year-round products by Cadbury that are gluten free. However Twirl is the exception with it’s plain flavour and almost all special editions (about three or four a year) being gluten free by ingredient.

• Twirl Honeycomb, 35g. Allergens: Milk, soy. May contain: Peanut, tree nuts.
• Twirl Iced Latte, 39g, 58g. Allergens: Milk, soy. May contain: Peanut, tree nuts.
• Curly Wurly, 26g. Allergens: Milk. May contain: Nil.
• Curly Wurly Squirlies, 130g. Allergens: Milk. May contain: Nil.
• Twirl Bites, 140g, 270g. Allergens: Milk, soy. May contain: Peanut, tree nuts.
• Mint Twirl Bites, 130g. Allergens: Milk, soy. May contain: Peanut, tree nuts.

I think these two might be hiding in the UK / international aisle but it’s on the Coles website and is indeed GF.

• Perky Nana, 45g. Allergens: Milk, soy. May contain: Peanut, tree nuts.

Bonus! Late one night I was on Facebook and saw a post about Cadbury Top Deck bites that are indeed GF by ingredient just like the Twirls. Woohoo, more options!

• Caramilk block, 180g, 315g. Allergens: Milk, soy. May contain: Peanut, tree nuts.

Coles

I feel like this Coles range is a new release, perhaps March or April 2024. Sour lollies in gluten free are pretty hard to come by, so you should definitely check these out.

In terms of price these are very good value, just $1.50 for the smallest bags.

• Jubes, 150g. Allergens: Nil. May contain: Milk, soy.
• Snakes, 150g, 650g. Allergens: Nil. May contain: Milk, soy.
• Party Mix, 150g, 650g. Allergens: Nil. May contain: Milk, soy.

• Sour Party Mix, 150g. Allergens: Nil. May contain: Milk, soy.
• Sour Cola Bottles, 150g. Allergens: Nil. May contain: Milk, soy.
• Spearmint Leaves, 225g. Allergens: Nil. May contain: Milk, soy.
• Marshmallows, 150g. Allergens: Nil. May contain: Nil.

The following incorrectly list gluten and wheat as allergens for wheat glucose syrup. They are absolutely fine for coeliacs and other gluten free folk.

• Extra Strong Mints, 200g. Allergens: Wheat, gluten*. May contain: Almond, peanut.
• Musk Sticks, 320g. Allergens: Wheat, gluten*, sulphites. May contain: Almond, hazelnuts, macadamia, milk, peanut, soy.
• Lemon Sherbet Bombs, 200g. Allergens: Wheat, gluten*, sulphites. May contain: Nil.
• Fruity Sherbet Bombs, 200g. Allergens: Wheat, gluten*, sulphites. May contain: Nil.
• Milk Bottles, 200g. Allergens: Wheat, gluten*, sulphites. May contain: Almond, peanut.

Coles Chocolate

Coles brand chocolate – yep, there’s a few! And guess what, the no added sugar range is allergen free. Everything. It’s quite rare to find chocolate without soy (send me a message if you need GF soy free choc, I’ve got a list). All dairy free which is great too.

These are also tested for gluten – not detected on the nutrition panel.

• Dark chocolate, 100g. Allergens: Nil. May contain: Nil.
• Mylk chocolate, 100g. Allergens: Nil. May contain: Nil.
• Dark chocolate with orange pieces, 100g. Allergens: Nil. May contain: Nil.
• Mylk chocolate and coconut, 100g. Allergens: Nil. May contain: Nil.
• Dark chocolate and peppermint, 100g. Allergens: Nil. May contain: Nil.

Chupa Chups

A quick note for dairy free folks, although Chupa Chups list milk in the allergens it is not the case for every flavour. Check their excellent website for ingredients of each flavour of their classic lollipop.

• Chupa chups, Mentos mix. Allergen: Milk, sulphites. May contain: Milk.

Double D

Double D are a brand that offer a range of sugar free sweets. In my experience compiling the Big W lolly guide most of them are gluten free. They test their products with Nil Detected on the nutrition panel.

• Manuka Honey Lozenges, 250g. Allergens: Nil. May contain: Nil.
• Honey Eucalyptus Drops, 150g. Allergens: Nil. May contain: Nil.

• Smart Sweets Fruits and Cream Gummies, 50g. Allergens: Nil. May contain: Nil.
• Smart Sweets Sour Bears, 50g. Allergens: Nil. May contain: Nil.
• Smart Sweets Berry Gummies, 50g. Allergens: Nil. May contain: Nil.
• Smart Sweets Sour Cola Bears, 50g. Allergens: Nil. May contain: Nil.

Funday

• Raspberry Frogs, 50g. Allergens: Nil. May contain: Tree nuts.
• Fruity Snakes, 50g. Allergens: Nil. May contain: Tree nuts.

Health Lab

Health Lab are more likely to be found in the health food aisle rather than the lolly aisle. The team at Health Lab make a number of gluten free treats and more recently low sugar products. While they make snacks and some questionable biscuits I’m only including their chocolates on this guide.

All of Health Lab’s products have a dubiously long list of may contains. I’m going to put it here otherwise the list below becomes impossible to read.

May Contain: Tree nuts, soy, egg, milk, lupin, peanut, sesame, sulphites.

• Miranda’s Delight, 160g. Allergen: Soy.
• Charlotte’s Fix, 160g. Allergen: Soy.
• Mr Big Caramel Peanut bars, 160g. Allergens: Peanut, soy.
• Low Sugar Choc dipped almonds, 150g. Allergen: Almond.

• Low Sugar truffles variety pack, 150g. Allergens: Peanut, hazelnut, almond.
• Low Sugar Caramel Choc Peanut truffles, 160g.
• Low Sugar Mylk Choc Hazelnut truffles, 150g. Allergen: Hazelnut.
• Low Sugar Mylk Choc Peanut truffles, 150g. Allergen: Peanut.

Kinder

So much by Kinder is gluten free, especially their seasonal ranges at Easter. The main thing to look out for is wafer, this will be made from wheat.

Coles has a lot of surprise eggs in various sizes and the Kinder chocolate bars.

• Kinder chocolate share bag, 50g, 126g, 200g. Allergens: Milk, soy. May contain: Nil.
• Kinder Surprise, 20g, 60g. Allergens: Milk, soy. May contain: Nil.

Lindt

White Lindt is saaaaafe, no barley malt! And yes, even the biscuit bits in the cheesecake flavour are GF, it’s potato starch and chickpea flour.

• Lindt Lindor Cheesecake chocolate, 123g. Allergens: Milk, soy. May contain: Almond, hazelnut.
• Lindor White Chocolate Block, 100g. Allergens: Milk, soy. May contain: Tree nuts.
• Lindor Strawberries & Cream White Chocolate, 125g. Allergens: Milk, soy. May contain: Tree nuts. Update: This has been GF by ingredient for years but in May 2024 it changed and now has may contain for barley, gluten.

Now these no sugar blocks below are new to me, they’ve been around for a while but I’ve never looked. As it turns out, sugar free Lindt does not contain barley malt extract – even in the milk chocolate!

• Milk No Sugar Added Lindt Chocolate, 100g. Allergens: Milk, soy. May contain: Tree nuts.
• Dark No Sugar Added Lindt Chocolate, 100g. Allergens: Milk, soy. May contain: Tree nuts.
• Les Grande Dark Chocolate Hazelnut, 150g. Allergens: Hazelnut, milk, soy. May contain: Other tree nuts.

Changing allergen warnings

So the dark Lindt is going on this guide with a word of caution. Since the start of 2024 Lindt has been updating allergen labelling on some of their products. As a result some items like their 78% dark chocolate blocks now have a may contain warning for gluten when they didn’t before.

So, I will be on the look out for changes but I recommend as always to check things yourself before purchase / eating.

From what I’ve been able to figure out, the products with a may contain warning for gluten are coming from the German and Swiss factories. Lindt also manufactures in France, Italy and occasionally Australia.

The packets below are made in France. I’m not going to list individual details for these as I’m feeling it’s subject to change. I’ll keep this as up to date as I can.

Mentos

I’m not sure I have the strength (or time) to write out every single packet gum available at Coles. So as a concession I’ll give you the Mentos products that are gluten free.

According to the Mentos website all their lollies are GF except Mentos choco (yep, chocolate Mentos).

Mentos often release limited edition flavours so it’s best to check those in store as it is sometimes hard to keep up!

• Fruit, 37g, 112g. Allergens: Nil. May contain: Nil.
• Rainbow, 37g. Allergens: Nil. May contain: Nil.
• Mint, 37g, 112g. Allergens: Nil. May contain: Nil.
• Summer ice cream, 37g. Allergens: Nil. May contain: Nil.
• Spearmint multipack, 112g. Allergens: Nil. May contain: Nil.

Menz

The company Menz actually own a lot of products you’ll see at the supermarket. More than what is labelled. Just for ease I’m including them all under the same group.

• Jelichocs Choccy Snakes, 130g. Allergens: Milk, soy, sulphites. May contain: Peanut, almond.
• Mint Violet Crumble, 130g. Allergens: Milk, soy. May contain: Peanut, almond.
• Bumbles Milk Choc honeycomb, 525g. Allergens: Milk, soy, sulphites. May contain: Peanut, almond.
• Violet Crumble bag, 150g, 280g. Allergens: Milk, soy. May contain: Peanut, almond.
• Violet Crumble bar, 50g. Allergens: Milk, soy. May contain: Peanut, almond.

Violet Crumble also does a few limited edition flavours, I’ve seen ruby chocolate, dark chocolate and even mint honeycomb! All have been gluten free.

• Polly Waffle Bites, 125g. Allergens: Milk, soy. May contain: Peanut, almond.

Misc

• Anthon Berg Cocktails, 125g. Allergens: Nil. May contain: Milk, nuts.
• Baci original dark, 125g. Allergens: Milk, hazelnut. May contain: Other tree nuts.
• Bailey’s Chocolate Truffles, 320g. Allergens: Milk, soy. May contain: Tree nuts.

If you’d asked me a moment ago if NOMO was at Coles I would have told you their range is exclusive to Woolies and Big W. Guess I got that wrong! NOMO are of course GF but more importantly dairy free.

• Creamy Choc Bar, 38g. Allergens: Nil. May contain: Nil.

Pana

Pana Organic make so many lovely gluten free and vegan products. Even better they are often soy free. They also have a range of ice cream tubs and stick ice creams that are like magnums.

• Mylk Tasman Sea Salt Chocolate, 80g. Allergens: Nil. May contain: Milk, peanut, tree nuts.

Pascall

Pascall release Lumps in a lot of flavours, usually changing every few months. At the moment there’s also raspberry on the shelves but I’ve seen mint, hokey pokey, even feijoa! Every flavour I’ve seen has been gluten free, but best to double check.

• Marshmallows, 280g, 520g. Allergens: Nil. May contain: Milk.

Reese’s

• Peanut Butter Cups, 42g. Allergens: Milk, soy, peanut. May contain: Nil.
• Reese’s unwrapped minis, 120g. Allergens: Milk, soy, peanut. May contain: Nil.
• Reese’s miniature cups, 150g. Allergens: Milk, soy, peanut. May contain: Nil.
• Caramel Big Cup, 30g. Allergens: Milk, soy, peanut. May contain: Nil.

• Reese’s Peanut Butter Cup White Chocolate, 39g. Allergens: Milk, soy, peanut. May contain: Nil.

Simply Wize

Simply Wize sell lollies under the name Simply Wize Irresistible. I’m thinking Irresistible was a GF lolly brand they bought at some point? My favourite thing about the party mix… I got a banana lolly in the bag one time, pure nostalgia!

Simply Wize actually have a massive range of lollies. They can be a bit hard to find, some IGA stores have a lot, otherwise your best bet is specialist grocers like Happy Tummies.

At Coles Simply Wize lollies are located in the health food aisle.

Skittles

If you’ve got a soy allergy take note, some contain soy and some don’t. Those that contain soy appear to be made in Australia, whereas the ones made in the Czech Republic use other ingredients like sunflower lecithin.

Sweet William

Sweet William chocolates are pretty much the ultimate free from brand. They are free from gluten, dairy, egg, nuts!

Good news – I just read on their website that they are working to phase out soy from their recipes. That’s great for those with a soy allergy or intolerance. If you look on their website a number of the recipes are now ‘may contain soy’ rather than contain. I’ll list them as the old recipe for now.

Toblerone

Yesssss coeliacs rejoice, Toblerone is gluten free! Nice when you don’t have to miss out on a classic.

Note: The more recently released Toblerone pralines are not GF, they have a may contain for wheat / gluten.

Trolli

Just the two gluten free lollies by Trolli at Coles. The packets are quite small, if you’re looking for bigger packs I’ve seen them as an Aldi special buy. Kmart also stocks mini bags perfect for Halloween and parties.

Well Naturally

These guys make a whole lot of low sugar chocolates in a variety of flavours. The great thing is they are all legit gluten free!
