As the weather here in Sydney turns more and more wintry I’m reaching for winter warmers. I picked up this packet of coconut pumpkin soup by Hart and Soul when it was on special at Woolworths. Hart and Soul make a huuuuuuge range of products, many of which are gluten free.

There are 12 gluten free soups on their website. You might be thinking, shouldn’t all soups be gluten free? Pretty much, however cheaper long-life soups tend to have wheat flour to thicken them, and of course noodles often use wheat.

But we’re in luck, Hart and Soul have three noodle soups which are made with konjac noodles rather than wheat ones. Bonus!

The taste

If I described the soup in three words it would be rich and creamy and spicy.

The consistency is thick, and the flavours are delicate. I was surprised to find it’s also slightly spicy. Despite the very few ingredients it really elevates the humble pumpkin soup.

Ingredients: Water, pumpkin (34%), coconut milk (19%), shallot, lemongrass, garlic, rice bran oil, ginger, galangal, salt, chilli, coriander.

It has large slivers of ginger or perhaps galangal. They aren’t strong in taste but a kid might get put off seeing these.

You could add a little water to make it go further. I did add a small amount, mainly to rinse out the remaining soup in the pouch.

Please excuse the bubbles!

The upgrade

As I mentioned above, it’s like this soup already is the upgrade. It’s got so much more going on than the classic pumpkin soup. The serving size is pretty good but you’d want a side like some bread or toast.

I’m certainly a fan of pairing a warming winter soup with a piece or two of cheese on toast (grilled cheese). When we had the soup we teamed it up with some leftover spiced chicken pieces. It was a good protein boost and worked well with the soup flavours.

THE VERDICT

Would I buy this Hart and Soul coconut pumpkin soup again? Absolutely. It was quick and easy and very filling. Perfect for a quick lunch and a great item to keep in the cupboard for a last minute meal.
