Ice Cream in Australia that’s Gluten Free

Ice Cream in Australia that’s Gluten Free

Posted: January 24, 2023 Updated: December 7, 2024

Summer is here in Australia and if you’re like me you’re searching for the next gluten free ice cream to cool you down.

If you haven’t already seen my complete guide to gluten free icy poles and ice creams (on a stick) in Australia check it out! This post is all about ice cream tubs.

While there are plenty of Aussie brands making gluten free ice cream for us there are also a few flavours in other brands that are also GF! Have a scroll through this list and I bet you’ll see an ice cream tub you didn’t know about. After all, who has the time to stand in the freezer section with all the doors open reading labels?

Well, I did that for you! 🥶

GLUTEN FREE BY INGREDIENT

For some brands on this list we’re very lucky, they are what I refer to as legit gluten free. Tested for gluten with a nil / not detected result.

However, there are also items on this list are gluten free by ingredient. This means they have no gluten containing ingredients and no may contain warnings. But they are not labelled gluten free and not tested.

It’s up to you what you eat, I’ll note what is what so you’re prepared. For what it’s worth most coeliacs I encounter in Australia are happy to eat gluten free by ingredient products. It opens up a far wider range of options, particularly for ice cream.

GLUCOSE SYRUP AND DEXTROSE FROM WHEAT

Glucose syrup from wheat is gluten free – this is because glucose is a simple sugar while gluten is a complex protein. This is the case for both dextrose and maltodextrin too. You can read more about glucose on the Coeliac Australia website.

Gluten free and dairy free ice cream tubs

I know a lot of folks out there struggle with dairy as well as gluten. So whenever I do a shopping guide I make a section of items that are both GF and DF. Note: the items I list in this section will be legit dairy free – no may contain warning. This means you might see a vegan item in the regular list, but it’ll have an allergen warning for dairy.

If you’re looking for gluten free vegan ice cream I recommend using the search tool in your browser and typing vegan.

Jump to the gluten free dairy free section.

Gluten free ice cream tubs in Australia

I’ve decided to do the list alphabetically (restarting in the dairy free section) so that you can scroll to your favourite brand and see what is available.

Ben and Jerry’s

There’s a few gluten-free by ingredient options available in Australia from Ben and Jerry’s.

  • Phish Food. Allergens: Milk, egg, soy. May contain: Peanut, tree nuts.
  • Topped, PB over the Top. Allergens: Milk, egg, peanut, soy.
The only two Ben and Jerry's ice cream flavours in Australia that are gluten free. Renders of the packaging.

Tubs of the Topped, PB over the top have popped up (March 2023) with a may contain for wheat – I’m not sure if it’s a once off batch or a regular thing. Be sure to check closely before buying / eating. I’ll keep an eye out – currently the Ben & Jerry’s website does not list wheat as a may contain.

I was pretty sure Triple Caramel Chunk was GF by ingredient but the Woolworths website shows a photo of the ingredients with a may contain for wheat. However, I just went to Woolworths today (24 Jan 2023) and saw it’s totally fine! Photo of ingredients below.

  • Caramel Triple Chunk. Allergens: Milk, egg, soy. May contain: Peanut, tree nuts.
Ben and Jerrys triple chunk caramel packaging and ingredients
I’d be sure to check the label closely on this one!
  • Chocolatey Love A-Fair Allergens: Milk, egg, soy. May contain: Nuts.
Limited edition so be quick!

Note: There’s a non-dairy version of this flavour and it contains barley so take care to select the correct tub!

Bulla

Australian company Bulla makes so many gluten free options, especially when it comes to stick ice creams and icy poles.

Update: I found out via a Facebook group in June 2023 that Bulla has updated some of their tubs to say ‘may contain gluten’ now! I’ve wrote to them to seek further information regarding this sudden change and to be honest they were pretty dismissive of gluten free folk.

In case you’ve used this list recently these are the tubs that now have a may contain statement – that I have seen in store. I would recommend checking all tubs you purchase as even in 2024 it’s still hit and miss.

Creamy Classics range – no longer gluten free by ingredient due to may contain warning.

  • Choc Chip allergens: milk, soy may contain: egg, peanut, tree nuts and gluten.
  • Vanilla 2L. Allergens: milk. May contain: egg, peanut, tree nuts and gluten.
  • Mint Choc Chip 2L Allergens: milk, soy. May contain: egg, peanut, tree nuts and gluten.
  • Vanilla and boysenberry allergens: milk. May contain: egg, peanut, tree nuts and gluten.
  • Neapolitan 2L allergens: milk may contain: egg, peanut, tree nuts and gluten.
  • Choc Hazelnut, 2L. Allergens: Milk. May contain: Egg, peanut, tree nuts and gluten.

I quite enjoyed the mint ice cream with chocolate chips. It’s really creamy, minty and the colour is great too so it’s a shame it’s off the cards now.

Big tubs

February 2024 I was doing a bit of checking (you never know when things change) and it seems the once labelled gluten free tubs of Bulla now have a may contain for gluten (and egg).

Murray Street

Mid-2022 Bulla released (re-released?) a range called Murray Street. 1 litre tubs of ice cream in decadent premium flavours like chocolate fudge ripple and vanilla bean.

Update: Unfortunately late 2023 there were reports coming through of may contain warnings. My last check Jan 2024 showed that just vanilla, chocolate and boysenberry were fine.

In April 2024 Bulla posted an update that they were removing egg from the ingredients but also add may contain gluten for vanilla, chocolate and boysenberry.

Coles

The home brand by Coles has a few options, it’s great that these are gluten free by ingredient. It makes me happy that, given how expensive gluten free can be, there are some low-cost options available. The two litre tub is just $4 while the larger four litre tub is $7.50.

  • Neapolitan ice cream tub 4L, Allergens: milk. May contain: peanut, tree nuts.
  • Vanilla ice cream tub 2L and 4L*, Allergens: milk. May contain: peanut, egg, tree nuts.
Coles Australia ice cream tubs. Neapolitan and vanilla are both gluten free.

*I noticed online that the packaging for the 4L vanilla tub lists wheat as an allergen (glucose syrup in the ingredients) so it’s definitely safe. I’ve checked in person and can confirm photo is just out of date. The recipe has actually changed and no longer lists wheat as an allergen.

In the Coles Irresistible range there are also a few options. I think there are more than the two below, however the Coles website doesn’t have a photo of the ingredients, so I need to check each of these in person. The wheat in both cases is from glucose syrup.

  • Rum and raisin ice cream tub, 1L Allergens: Milk, wheat*. May contain: Peanut, tree nuts.
  • Honey Caramel & Macadamia Ice Cream Tub, 1L Allergens: Milk, macadamia, wheat*. May contain: Peanut, other tree nuts.

Denada

These guys make a range of sugar free ice cream, all of the flavours are legit gluten free, not detected on the nutrition panel.

There’s new flavours available since August 2024, while the cappuccino fudge is vegan it has a may contain for milk so I haven’t put it in the dairy free section.

  • Vegan cappuccino fudge, 473mL. Allergen: Soy. May contain: Milk, peanut, cashew, pistachio, pecan, walnut, almond, hazelnut, macadamia.
  • Dulce de leche, 473mL. Allergen: Milk. May contain: Peanut, cashew, pistachio, pecan, walnut, almond, hazelnut, macadamia.
  • Mint sundae, 473mL. Allergen: Milk, soy. May contain: Peanut, cashew, pistachio, pecan, walnut, almond, hazelnut, macadamia.
  • Triple choc, 473mL. Allergen: Milk, soy. May contain: Peanut, cashew, pistachio, pecan, walnut, almond, hazelnut, macadamia.
  • Fairy bread, 473mL. Allergen: Milk, soy. May contain: Peanut, cashew, pistachio, pecan, walnut, almond, hazelnut, macadamia.

Destination Italy

New for 2024! YAY! I’m always so so happy when a new ice cream comes out, and then I tend to wait patiently until it goes on special 😅. There are four flavours in the new release, I’ve checked all the labels and they are all gluten free by ingredient, woohoo!

These are exclusive to Coles, I think it might actually just be a brand owned by Coles. Note, the lemon is not DF, it contains milk.

  • Salted caramel gelato. Allergen: Milk. May contain: Egg, peanut, soy, almond, hazelnut, pistachio, walnut.
  • Pistachio and vanilla gelato. Allergen: Milk, soy, pistachio. May contain: Egg, peanut, almond, hazelnut, walnut.
  • Chocolate hazelnut gelato. Allergen: Milk, hazelnut. May contain: Egg, peanut, soy, almond, pistachio, walnut.
  • Lemon gelato. Allergen: Milk. May contain: Egg, peanut, soy, almond, hazelnut, pistachio, walnut.

Elato

Apologies to any long term readers, this is a late entry! Not sure if the gluten free status changed or I missed it, but it’s ‘new’ for 2024! Elato comes in four flavours, one of them is vegan but there are facility warnings regarding milk so it’s not in the DF section.

Actually while we’re on it, the product claims to be free from soy and nuts. But each product states it’s made in facilities that use milk, eggs, peanuts, soy, tree nuts. What on earth?!

  • Triple vanilla. Allergens: Milk, eggs. May contain: Soy, peanut, tree nuts.
  • Dark chocolate truffle. Allergens: Nil. May contain: Milk, egg, soy, peanut, tree nuts.
  • Fig ripple. Allergens: Milk, eggs. May contain: Soy, peanut, tree nuts.
  • Cold brew decaf cafe latte. Allergens: Milk, eggs. May contain: Soy, peanut, tree nuts.

Gelativo

Nil detected on gluten. Gelativo also do a GF/DF range so check the lower part of this article to see their sorbets.

  • Coffee gelato, 1L. Allergens: Milk. May contain: Nil.
  • Chocolate gelato, 1L. Allergens: Milk.
Packaging for Gelativo gelato coffee, and chocolate.
You’ll find these in Woolworths

Gelista

The Gelista brand is based in South Australia, I’ve spotted their ice cream in IGA and Harris Farms.Oh my this stuff is good. Despite the small size of 500mL they are very heavy tubs. While most ice creams are whipped up with air this gelato is much more dense. More value for money I think!

I’ve tried a few of the flavours and absolutely loved them. I’ve had ricotta and fig, double peppermint chip and the caramel peanut butter.

Unfortunately their allergen details aren’t online, but I’ll update this when I see them in store. **I had a photo on my phone of the peanut butter flavour ingredients.

  • Blood Orange & Dark Chocolate
  • Classic Chocolate.
  • Espresso Mokitini with Chocolate Ganache
  • Lightly Salted Caramel Macadamia
  • Peanut Butter with Chocolate and Caramel Swirl. Allergens: Milk, peanut, tree nuts, soy.
  • Ricotta, Fig & Honey
  • Vanilla Bean

Gelista also do a dairy free range, check it out further down the page.

Golden North

The company Golden North are based in South Australia with their products distributed around the country. I personally haven’t seen many in NSW / Victoria but there is a handy guide on their website for stockists.

Golden North have two listings on this article as they also do a big range of proper dairy free ice creams (not just sorbets either!).

Fun fact, they are also nut free with all their products made in a nut free facility.

Indulge Me range

The range contains gelatin so these are not suitable for vegetarians.

  • Salted Caramel Crunch 1L. Allergens: Milk. Note: the crunch is from honeycomb pieces.
  • Vanilla Bean 1L. Allergens: Milk.
  • Strawberries and Cream 1L. Allergens: Milk.

Simply Indulge range

This range is the bigger 2L, blue tubs. These tubs also contain gelatin, so again not suitable for vegetarians.

  • Boysenberry 2L. Allergens: Milk.
  • Honey 2L. Allergens: Milk.
  • Iced Coffee 2L. Allergens: Milk.
  • Rum and Raisin 2L. Allergens: Milk. Contains alcohol.
  • Spearmint Sundae 2L. Allergens: Milk, soy.
  • Vanilla 2L. Allergens: Milk.
  • Vanilla Sundae 2L. Allergens: Milk, soy.

Other GF products in the Golden North range

A few more items including huuuuuge five litre tubs and a diet option that is suitable for those with diabetes. Happily, none of these contain gelatin so they are suitable for vegetarians.

  • Diet Plus Vanilla 2L. Allergens: Milk.
  • Country Style Vanilla 2L and 5L. Allergens: Milk.
  • Country Style Neapolitan 5L. Allergens: Milk. May contain: Soy.
  • Simply Better No Added Sugar Vanilla. Allergens: Milk.

Greenback

Plant-based / vegan brand Greenback are a brand in Australia making high-protein ice cream that happens to be gluten free. Looking at the packaging it’s got the gluten free claim but doesn’t have the nil detected. However, they are quite detailed with their allergens and there is no may contain for gluten.

These guys are not on the dairy free list as they do have a may contain for milk. Greenback are exclusive to Coles supermarkets. They also do stick ice creams, so expect an update on my other list, gluten free ice creams and icy poles in Australia.

  • Hazelnut Ripple Protein Ice Cream Tub Allergens: Soy, hazelnut, peanut. May contain: Milk, Sesame, Cashew, Pistachio, Pecan, Walnut, Almond & Macadamia
  • Choc Peanut Crunch Protein Ice Cream Allergens: Soy, peanut. May contain: Milk, Sesame, Cashew, Pistachio, Pecan, Walnut, Almond, Hazelnut & Macadamia
  • Salted Caramel Swirl Protein Ice Cream Allergens: Soy, peanut. May contain: Milk, Sesame, Cashew, Pistachio, Pecan, Walnut, Almond, Hazelnut & Macadamia

Gym Bod

A quick note about Gym Bod ice cream – if you look at the Coles website you’d happily see on the ingredients it lists gluten free flour for the brownie in the chocolate pudding ice cream recipe. However, if you head to the Gym Bod website you’ll see they have a cross contamination warning. It is quite detailed, including that they do allergen clean downs. Have a read, see what you think.

Haagen-dazs

Luxurious real ice cream. I love that Haagen-dazs uses so few ingredients. This is because it’s a pure simple ice cream that’s delicious, but it also makes it super easy to read the ingredients. The following ice cream flavours are gluten free and readily available in all supermarkets across Australia.

  • Strawberries & Cream Ice Cream Allergens: Milk, egg.
  • Belgian Chocolate Ice Cream Allergens: Milk, egg, soy.
  • Vanilla Ice Cream Allergens: Milk, egg.
Packing of gluten free ice cream available in Australia by Haagen Dasz. Strawberry, chocolate, vanilla.
  • Salted caramel Allergens: Milk, egg. May contain: Soy, tree nuts
  • Mini cups fruit collection. Allergens: Milk, egg.
  • Mini cups classic collection. Allergens: Egg, milk, soy. May contain: Tree nuts

There’s also a range of boozy Haagen Dazs that I believe is a Coles exclusive. They are also gluten free! There’s also lime mojito which is dairy free so it’s down in the DF section.

  • Pina Colada Ice Cream Allergens: Milk, egg. (contains alcohol)
  • Mango and Raspberry Ice Cream Allergens: Milk, egg.
Haagen dazs ice cream tubs. Pina colada and mango and raspberry.
  • Macadamia brittle. Allergens: Milk, egg, macadamia. May contain: Tree nuts.

Hershey’s

It always pays to chat to coeliacs and gluten free folks – it’s often how I’m alerted to gluten free products. Of the Hershey’s the chocolate tub is gluten free, the caramel chocolate contains barley. The new strawberry tub is GF too!

Note: In October 2024 people started noticing the chocolate tub now has a may contain for wheat / gluten. Please check closely, all the tubs I’ve seen did not have it so there’s a change over in stock going on.

  • Hershey’s Chocolate Ripple Ice Cream Tub 1L Now has a may contain for wheat / gluten
  • Hershey’s Chocolate Strawberry Ripple 1L Now has a may contain for wheat / gluten

Hinterland

The Hinterland range do list wheat as an allergen. However, in all the flavours below this is due to glucose syrup. Hopefully they’ll update their packaging as glucose syrup is highly processed, so it contains no detectable gluten.

  • Espresso With Choc Almonds. Allergens: Milk, wheat*, Almond, Macadamia, Hazelnut, Soy. May contain: Peanut, tree nuts.
  • Passionfruit Ripple. Allergens: Milk, wheat*. May contain: Peanut, tree nuts.
  • Caramel Macadamia. Allergens: Milk, macadamia, wheat*. May contain: Peanut, tree nuts.
  • Vanilla Bean. Allergens: Milk, wheat*. May contain: Peanut, tree nuts.
  • Rum and Raisin. Allergens: Milk, wheat*. May contain: Peanut, tree nuts
  • Burnt Butter Caramel. Allergens: Milk, wheat*. May contain: Peanut, tree nuts.

KAPITI

Aldi stocks Kapiti ice cream, a New Zealand brand with a few different ice cream tubs and sticks. Most of what I’ve seen is gluten free – and there’s one dairy free in the section below.

Aldi ice creams come and go, so if you don’t see these on your next visit don’t lose hope, they’ll likely show up again!

Both of these tubs are tested gluten free on the nutrition panel – woohoo!

  • Vanilla Bean ice cream. Allergens: Milk. May contain: Peanut, tree nuts.
  • White Chocolate and Raspberry ice cream. Allergens: Milk, soy. May contain: Peanut, tree nuts.
Aldi vanilla bean ice cream kapiti, kapiti white chocolate and raspberry packaging

Two more Aldi flavours I’ve seen pop up, the triple chocolate has been around a few times. The affogato was a new addition around June 2024. Limited time only as usual, but I’m sure they’ll be back again.

  • Affogato. Allergens: Milk. May contain: Peanut, tree nuts.
  • Triple Chocolate. Allergens: Milk, soy. May contain: Peanut, tree nuts.

La Creme

Possibly one of my favourite ice creams is the green tea ice cream by La Creme. It’s creamy, rich and has such a good matcha / green tea flavour. The only allergen is milk.

There’s also black sesame, mango, and coconut flavours – I think I’ve also seen durian. I’ll have to come back to this as the La Creme brand is very hard to find online and I’ve just moved so I no longer have a local place to buy these!

Much Moore

This New Zealand brand offers a decent range of ice cream in Australia that is gluten free. While they aren’t labelled gluten free the allergens and may contains are clearly visible on the labels. Their website is a bit hit and miss for allergens. The salted caramel lists may contain for wheat / gluten, but products recently purchased (Sept 2024) show that is not the case.

They offer a range in family size 2L tubs as well as premium flavoured 1L tubs.

Two litre tubs – Premium

  • Hokey pokey (note this contains beef gelatin) allergens: milk *** website says may contain wheat gluten soy
  • Boysenberry stracciatella, 2L. Allergens: Milk, soy. May contain: Nil.
  • Salted Caramel, 2L. Allergens: Milk. May contain: Nil.
I’ll add the Salted Caramel flavour when I get a chance!

One litre tubs – Premium Creations

  • Passionfruit & White Chocolate Allergens: Milk, soy.
  • Vanilla bean Allergens: Milk.

Peters

Legit gluten free! Gluten free labels on the front and nil detected in the nutrition panels, woohoo! It’s great that you can get big tubs of gluten free ice cream in Australia. It’s particularly handy if you’ve got a big family of coeliacs to look after.

  • Banana Split Ice Cream 2L Allergens: milk, soy. May contain: Peanut, tree nuts. CA endorsed
  • Neapolitan 2L Allergens: Milk, soy. May contain: Peanut, tree nuts. CA endorsed
  • Vanilla, 2L and 4L Allergens: Milk, soy. May contain: Peanut, tree nuts. CA endorsed
Packaging for ice cream tubs by Peters. Gluten free is clearly marked on each pack as well as made in Australia.
  • Rainbow 2L Allergens: Milk, soy. May contain: peanut, tree nuts. CA endorsed
  • Triple Delight 2L, Allergens: Milk, soy. May contain: peanut, tree nuts. CA endorsed
  • Chocopolitan 2L Allergens: Milk, soy. May contain: peanut, tree nuts. CA endorsed

Bonus! In September 2024 I discovered we’re getting a new flavour from Peter’s – choc mint swirl!

  • Choc mint swirl, 2L Allergens: Milk, soy. May contain: peanut, tree nuts.

Note: despite having a range of tested ice creams there are Peters products that are not coeliac safe. So just make sure you check and stick to this list.

Items that aren’t gluten free include

  • Peters No Sugar Added Vanilla Tub 1.2L (may contain gluten)
  • Light & Creamy Choc Caramel & Vanilla Swirl Ice Cream 1.8L (may contain gluten, wheat)
  • Light & Creamy French Vanilla Ice Cream 1.8L (may contain gluten, wheat)
  • Light & Creamy Classic Vanilla Ice Cream 1.8L (may contain gluten, wheat)

Sara Lee

Lucky for us most of the Sara Lee ice cream range are gluten free, including my personal favourite rocky road. In fact, when they recently updated the recipe to make it gluten free, I wrote an entire article about it.

Sara Lee seem to mix it up with flavours and they don’t email me so it gets out of date quickly! They no longer do dulce de leche or mango, but they do have Bailey’s!

  • Ultra Chocolate, 1L. Allergens: Milk, egg. May contain: Peanut, tree nuts.
  • French Vanilla, 1L. Allergens: Milk, egg. May contain: Peanut, tree nuts.
  • Strawberries and Cream, 1L. Allergens: Milk. May contain: Peanut, tree nuts.
  • Rocky Road, 1L. Allergens: Milk, peanut, soy. May contain: Tree nuts.
  • Bailey’s, 475mL. Allergens: Milk. May contain: Peanut, tree nuts.
  • Hokey Pokey, a new release October 2023. Allergens: Milk, soy. May contain: Peanut, tree nuts.

Snackboy

Okay, I had never heard of this brand until researching for this list but here we are. Another plant-based / vegan brand (unfortunately with may contain for milk) making protein-rich ice cream in Australia. The good news, they are legit gluten free, not detected on the nutrition panel.

  • Salted caramel (with a caramel core) Allergens: Almond. May contain: Milk, egg, soy, peanut, tree nuts.
  • Snackboy Loving Earth Dark Chocolate Hazelnut Dessert Allergens: Hazelnut, cashew, almond. May contain: Milk, egg, soy, peanut, tree nuts.
  • Salted caramel with caramel fudge core and Loving Earth white chocolate chunks Allergens: Hazelnut, cashew, almond. May contain: Milk, egg, soy, peanut, tree nuts.

If you’re wondering where to find them, they are exclusive to Coles.

Streets

Viennetta is fine – it says dextrose from wheat but we know that’s okay. Oddly, it’s made in Portugal. Allergens: Milk, sulphites, wheat (dextrose). May contain: Nuts, soy.

Sadly many of the Streets big tubs have may contain listings! Hopefully they’ll get their act together and sort out their allergens so that we can have even more gluten free ice cream options in Australia.

Twisted

Legit gluten free, not detected on the packet! I was debating putting these on the list as they are yoghurt and not ice cream. Buuuut, they look the part in their soft serve style so I’ve included them.

  • Minis, four tubs two strawberry and vanilla, two chocolate and vanilla. Allergens: Milk, soy. May contain: Nuts
  • Minis, coconut/passionfrut and chocolate/white chocolate. Allergens: Milk, soy. May contain: Nuts.
  • Chocolate and Cookie frozen yoghurt. Allergens: Milk. May contain: Peanut, tree nuts.
  • Raspberry and White Chocolate frozen yoghurt. Allergens: Milk. May contain: Peanut, tree nuts.

Weis

Weis get two listings as they do both dairy-based and dairy free products.

  • Half & Half Pineapple, Lime & Vanilla Sorbet Ice Cream Allergens: Milk. May contain: Tree nuts.
  • Half & Half Mango & Vanilla Icecream Allergens: Milk. May contain: Tree nuts.

Woolworths

These are a late addition to my list (June 2023), I think it was just that my old local store didn’t stock them so I didn’t know about it! Please note, the current listing for vanilla on the Woolworths website has the incorrect ingredients. However the image on the page is up to date and I’ve seen it in store.

  • Woolworths Vanilla Ice Cream 2L Allergens: Milk. May contain: Egg, peanut, tree nuts.
  • Woolworths Choc-nilla Ice Cream 2L Allergens: Milk. May contain: Egg, peanut, tree nuts.
Woolworths brand ice cream tubs vanilla and choc-nilla
I love that they skipped the strawberry in the choc-nilla!

There’s a few fancy flavours by Woolies that I spotted December 2023. Two flavours are GF by ingredient, if you ignore the glucose syrup (wheat) warning – which we can totally do, it’s safe for coeliacs.

The two flavours are pretty wild, but I’m keen for what is basically PB and J!

  • Peanut butter cup raspberry ripple, 473mL. Allergens: *Gluten, *wheat, milk, peanut, soy. May contain: Almond, cashew, hazelnut, macadamia, pecan, pistachio, walnut.
  • White chocolate macadamia mango, 473mL. Allergens: *Gluten, *wheat, milk, macadamia, soy. May contain: Peanut, almond, cashew, hazelnut, pecan, pistachio, walnut.
It’s glucose syrup so we’re all good!

Gluten free, dairy free ice cream tubs in Australia

As mentioned at the start of this article, the ice creams in the dairy free section are legit dairy free. That means no may contain warning. If you are vegan / enjoying a plant-based diet I invite you to scroll the full page as many items listed above do not contain dairy but are not suitable for those with a dairy allergy.

Aldi

There’s one DF brand I’ve noticed at Aldi which is Yoconut. They’ve got at least three flavours, you’ll have to excuse the photos, you can’t easily get photos of Aldi products. They are tested gluten free.

  • Salted caramel Yoconut, 475mL. Allergens: Nil. May contain: Almond, hazelnut, macadamia, peanut, soy.
  • Mint choc Yoconut, 475mL. Allergens: Soy. May contain: Almond, hazelnut, macadamia, peanut.
  • Vanilla Yoconut, 475mL. Allergens: Nil. May contain: Almond, hazelnut, macadamia, peanut, soy.

Amazonia

Acai sorbet comes from an Australian owned company, however it is made in Brazil. It’s got a gluten free claim but not tested. Looks good though! Allergens: nil.

Acai sorbet is exclusive to Woolworths

Coyo

When I first published this guide way back in January 2023 I was pretty strict and didn’t include frozen yoghurt. I mean, it’s not ice cream… However, I know many people who follow me on Facebook are gluten free and dairy free.

That’s enough reason to show the GF DF folks more options. These are all GF by ingredient, they haven’t been tested.

  • Cookies & Cream, 500mL. Allergens: Nil. May contain: Sesame, cashew, almond, macadamia.
  • Vanilla Bean, 500mL. Allergens: Nil. May contain: Nil.
  • Double Chocolate. Allergens: Nil. May contain: Nil.

There’s a few more flavours on the Coyo website but I’m not 100% sure they are still available. Let me know if you’ve seen these!

  • Salted Caramel, 500mL. Allergens: Nil. May contain: Nil.
  • Mint Choc Chip, 500mL. Allergens: Nil. May contain: Nil.
  • Coffee Caramel, 500mL. Allergens: Nil. May contain: Nil.

Coyo also makes frozen yoghurt (apparently what’s above is ice cream?).

  • Mango frozen yoghurt, 500mL. Allergens: Nil. May contain: Nil.
  • Vanilla Bean frozen yoghurt, 500mL. Allergens: Nil. May contain: Nil.
  • Strawberry frozen yoghurt, 500mL. Allergens: Nil. May contain: Nil.

Denada

Denada used to do some dairy free options, however their current vegan offering has a may contain for milk so it is up in the regular section.

Gelativo

Nil detected on gluten, woohoo! And no may contain for dairy. With no allergens at all this range is perfect for everyone (provided they like the flavours!).

  • Passionfruit sorbet. Allergens: Nil.
  • Mango sorbet. Allergens: Nil.
  • Lemon lime sorbet. Allergens: Nil.

Gelista

I haven’t seen them in store lately so I wrote to Gelista to double check (Jan 2023). I’m happy to say they confirmed the the dairy free are truly dairy free – they confirmed no may contain for milk!

Non dairy range

  • Chocolate Almond Fudge
  • Coconut with Raspberry Swirl
  • Peppermint Double Choc
  • Dairy Free Vanilla Bean
  • Mango with Passionfruit Swirl

Golden North

These guys feature above in the dairy list but here’s the range of dairy free items they offer. None of the dairy free range contain gelatin so they are all suitable for vegans / vegetarians.

Sorbet

  • Lemon 1.2L. Allergens: Nil.
  • Mango 1.2L. Allergens: Nil.
  • Raspberry 1.2L. Allergens: Nil.
  • Passionfruit 1.2L. Allergens: Nil.

Haagen-Dazs

Just one gluten free dairy free option from Haagen Dasz but it sounds so good!

  • Lime Mojito Sorbet Allergens: Nil. (contains alcohol)

Kapiti

Kapiti are a New Zealand brand that I often see popping up for sale in Aldi. Many of their items I’ve come across are gluten free and while I’ve only tried a few, they were delicious! I’ll add more as I see them at Aldi, but do note they are often only available for a limited time.

  • Summer Berries sorbet. Allergens: Soy. May contain: Peanut, tree nuts.

Nature’s Kitchen by Coles

Hooray for more GF / DF options! In February 2024 a Facebook user kindly posted the return of Nature’s Kitchen ice cream tubs. Both are GF by ingredient, and properly dairy free – none of that ‘may contain milk’ nonsense we often see on plant-based products.

  • Nature’s Kitchen Vanilla Bean. Allergens: Nil. May contain: Almond, cashew, hazelnut, macadamia, pecan, pistachio, walnut, peanut.
  • Nature’s Kitchen Cookies and Creme. Allergens: Nil. May contain: Almond, cashew, hazelnut, macadamia, pecan, pistachio, walnut, peanut.
Packaging for nature's kitchen vanilla and cookies and cream ice cream tubs.
Yep, cookie pieces! They are made from maize starch.

Pana Organic

Pana Organic Dairy Free Frozen Desserts are great! I’ve only tried a few of the stick ice creams but I’ve loved them. Pana Organic ice cream are gluten free (tested) and endorsed by Coeliac Australia.

  • Vanilla Bean Allergens: Nil. May contain: Tree nuts
  • Double Chocolate
  • Salted Mango & Macadamia Allergens: Macadamia. May contain: Other tree nuts
  • Hazelnut Chocolate Ripple Allergens: Hazelnuts. May contain: Peanut, sesame, other tree nuts.
  • Burnt Fig and Caramel Allergens: nil. May contain: Tree nuts.

My husband bought me the Maple Peanut for Valentine’s in 2023 after reading my Valentine’s guide (aww!). It was a bit icy with the maple swirl but really tasty! Pana Organic website says it is stocked at independent grocers. So best to check out your local IGA, same for the Salted Caramel.

So Good

Everyone’s* favourite dairy-free ice cream is back in business! I showed this ice cream list to my mate who needs dairy free and he lamented that So Good is impossible to find these days. The factory had closed in 2022 due to the Lismore floods, so it has been some time getting it back to market.

However you can now find So Good vanilla at independent grocers around the country. Oh and it’s legit gluten free, nil detected. Oct 2023 update: It’s now in Woolworths and chocolate flavour is back too!

  • So Good Vanilla Bliss ice cream 1L. Allergens: Soy. May contain: Peanut, tree nuts.
  • So Good Chocolate Bliss ice cream 1L. Allergens: Soy. May contain: Peanut, tree nuts.
Packaging for So Good vanilla and chocolate ice cream. on the front it says gluten free, dairy free, vegan friendly

*my mate, not actually everyone.

Weis

Just the one ‘dairy free’ tub from Weis but rest assured, it’s a good one. I bought this tub in 2022 while on a dairy free stint and it’s quite lovely. The coconut base actually works quite well with the chocolate giving you a kind of lamington vibe and the raspberry is nicely tangy.

  • Raspberry and Dark Chocolate. Allergens: Soy. May contain: Tree nuts.

A few days after posting this I spotted another dairy free item by Weis! I realised their dairy free filter doesn’t include their sorbets! Here are their sorbets, which are all legit dairy free.

  • Mango sorbet. Allergens: Nil. May contain: Tree nuts.
  • Lemon sorbet. Allergens: Nil. May contain: Tree nuts.
  • Berry sorbet. Allergens: Nil. May contain: Tree nuts.

That concludes my huuuuuge list of gluten free ice cream tubs you can buy in Australia. Have you seen others that I should add? Let me know in the comments!

In the mean time if you need even more ice cream check out my ice cream and icy pole list!

  • Well I can not tolerate glucose from wheat and this is deceiving. Coeliac means no gluten. I can’t tolerate it I must be very sensitive and at least I have symptoms while others are consuming it unknowingly unaware that it has any impact.

    • Thanks for comment. It is certainly difficult that for coeliacs there is a range of sensitivity. In this article I include a link to the Coeliac Australia website which gives expert advise on wheat-derived glucose syrup. As CA says, wheat glucose syrup is suitable for the vast majority of those with coeliac disease, but it is still a personal decision to make.
I hope my guide is helpful still as I have pointed out which products declare wheat glucose syrup. 🙂

Have a sweet summer! Kati x

  • I thought I should let you know about the Ben and Jerry’s PB Over the Top… I felt ill one night after eating it and pulled back the label slapped on it by Unilever only to discover a may contain wheat notice on the American label. This didn’t get transferred onto the Australian label. I was so disappointed

    • Hi Bree, thanks so much for the heads up on this – it’s rather strange and concerning! I’ve had a look through the Ben and Jerry’s website and compared some photos I have too. Overall, B&J are quite good with their may contain practices and I do wonder if it’s either a batch change or a labelling error.

Either way I’ll make a note next to this flavour in the list, I always encourage extra checks before purchase just in case. Some brands have changed while I researched for this article!

I hope you are feeling better since then and fully recovered, Kati x

  • Thanks so much for this list! Super helpful. I’ve just had a look at a tub of Norco classic vanilla and it’s labelled both glucose syrup and maltodextrin as being derived from wheat. I hadn’t even realised that maltodextrin could be derived from wheat! I think I’ll still end up eating it but it is really nerve wracking eating something that straight up claims to contain wheat
