Gluten Free Christmas Chocolates and Treats 2023

Gluten Free Christmas Chocolates and Treats 2023

Posted: November 10, 2022 Updated: November 28, 2024

Yet another in my Christmas series focussing on gluten free foods, with the most important – treats like chocolate! This post covers chocolates and lollies that you’ll find all around Australia.

As many long time gluten free folk in Australia know, the holiday season is a boon for gluten free chocolates. Brands like Cadbury which are normally filled with ‘may contain’ statements release exclusive seasonal products made in different factories – clean facilities without the risk of cross contamination.

So, like at Easter, now is the time to stock up on your favourite chocolates and hoard them for the coming year.

If you’re more into gluten free lollies than chocolate we’ve got you covered. Take a scroll through the list and see.

This article contains some affiliate links, they may earn a small commission to me at no extra cost to you. I’ve marked them with an * for full disclosure. For more details see my Marketing Disclosure Statement.

How to use this guide

All the Christmas treats in this guide are completely gluten free. That means gluten free ingredients and no may contain warnings. Where I have access to allergens I will post them and highlight if an item is dairy free or vegan.

As always, double check before you buy – some products may be gluten free in one size and have a may contain in another (this happened with a chocolate bilby at Easter).

How to navigate the guide

Quite a few items are store exclusives while others are found in multiple stores. I’ll do my best do note locations – especially for dairy free as I know that’s much trickier to find.

If you’re after something specific use the search function on your browser. Can’t find what you’re looking for? Send me an enquiry or a message through my Instagram account!

In 2022 I organised this guide by stores and then by brand but it’s become a bit unwieldy and difficult to navigate. From mid-November 2023 I’m going to start rearranging it to be alphabetical by brand – so it’ll be a mess for a while until I finish. Bear with me on this!

Aero chocolate

A surprise find hiding in The Reject Shop are these peppermint Aero bubbles! Like the KitKat Santa above these are a special import from the UK. The UK Aero bars do not have a may contain warning, making them gluten free and safe to eat!

Note: Australian Aero is not gluten free in Australia due to may contain.

I foolishly didn’t get a photo of the ingredients so I’ve downloaded it from the UK website.

Yessss!

Aldi

I honestly had no idea what to expect walking into Aldi looking for Christmas items. They did previously stock a few advent calendars but this was only temporary. This year they have a range I’d describe as European – fudge, nougat, chocolate covered nuts.

My hot tip – the almond crispbreads. Oh they are so good, my mother bought them last year and I have absolutely treasured them with a cup of coffee. But let’s see the rest of the range.

Milk chocolate almonds and peanuts

Ok so these are obviously a duplicate of the Cadbury offer but I am not complaining. Under the Dairy Fine brand they offer roasted almonds or roast peanuts covered in milk chocolate.

Milk chocolate peanuts

Allergens: Peanut, milk, soy. May contain: Almond, hazelnut, macadamia.

Milk chocolate almonds

Allergens: Almond, milk, soy. . May contain: Peanut, hazelnut, macadamia.

Nougat

I spotted two flavours at my local Aldi. The first was pecan, fig and burnt caramel. The second was almond and pistachio. They are both 150g and come in a long box. These are legit gluten free with nil detected on the back.

Pecan, fig and burnt caramel

Allergens: Egg, milk, soy, pecan. May contain: Peanut, sesame, other tree nuts.

Almond and pistachio

Allergens: Egg, milk, soy, almond, pistachio. May contain: Peanut, sesame, other tree nuts.

Fudge

Made in the UK, like so many good fudges are, there are oodles of flavours available at Aldi. I got photos of the flavours of as many as I could find, but not the ingredients for all.

Overall they obviously all contain milk, they are also labelled suitable for vegetarians.

Allergens: Milk. May contain: Peanut, tree nuts.

Canadian maple fudge

Gingerbread fudge

I had gingerbread fudge two years ago at Christmas and it was absolutely divine. It was from Aldi UK so it’s probably the same one!

Salted caramel fudge, butter fudge and clotted cream fudge

Butterscotch

Is butterscotch the hard caramel? Like a Werther’s Original? I assume so. At Aldi I saw two flavours, both chocolate dipped. One was burnt butter and the other was ginger. I only got the ingredients / allergens for one, but like the fudge they were all similar.

Burnt butter butterscotch dipped in milk chocolate, ginger butterscotch dipped in dark chocolate

Allergens: Milk, soy. May contain: Peanut, tree nuts.

Almond crispbread

These! These are the best ever. I only got one packet last Christmas (thank you mum!) but they are so good and I didn’t share them with my husband. These are legit gluten free – not detected on the back.

Allergens: Egg, soy, almond. May contain: Milk, sesame, other tree nuts.

My favourite Christmas item at Aldi

Anthon Berg

Mini booze chocolates are definitely a joyful pleasure. In fact, my mother bought me a packet of these last Christmas! The label photo I took was rather hard to read so I’ve typed it up for you all. You can also get these at Kmart – but oddly Target is better value (both are $22, but the Target box is bigger).

Anthon Berg chocolate liqueurs packaging and ingredients

Get them from: Target.

Chocolate cocktails

Another delicious boozy Anthon Berg! This one is cocktails with margarita, cosmopolitan and mojito. The allergens are the same as the other Anthon Bergs in the list. So far I’ve only seen this pack at Big W.

May contain: Milk, nuts.

Same may contains, milk and nuts

Get them from Big W.

Baci

If you love hazelnuts then Baci is the chocolate treat for you – best of all they are legit gluten free. Just take a look at the back of the packet for the big bold Senza Gluten (gluten free in Italian). Made in Italy they have a whole hazelnut, hazelnut praline / cream before being coated in chocolate. There’s even a raspberry one. Best of all, the boxes are gorgeous – it’s a great last minute gift.

Get it from delis, IGA and other speciality retailers.

Benedicts

Are Benedicts the best mint chocolates ever? Perhaps, though After Eight might come close. Every year Aldi stocks boxes of these and my mother rushes in and buys at least four of them.

While they aren’t labelled gluten free in Australia, they are in the UK – and they are all made in Germany so it’s the same boxes! Better yet, they are also vegan (that’s why my mum buys so many, one just for me, one just for my vegan brother).

Allergen: Soy. May contain: Hazelnut, almond, peanut and other nuts.

Get it from: Aldi in the special buy area.

Cadbury

Cadbury is the hero when it comes to gluten free Christmas chocolate. For everything that isn’t coeliac safe during the year, Easter and Christmas bring back the goodies.

Milk Tray

Stop the press! A new sighting for 2023, Cadbury’s Milk Tray is gluten free by ingredient. Unfortunately I didn’t get a photo of the back (it was so hard getting a picture of the front without my reflection!). But you can see all the ingredients and the flavours on the Woolies website.

Milk chocolate baubles

If you’re after a classic Cadbury chocolate hit this is what you’ll need. Cadbury dairy milk chocolate in delicious little balls. These are available at Coles and Woolworths.

Allergens: Milk, soy. May contain: Peanuts, tree nuts.

Caramilk baubles

So far this is the closest you’ll get to white chocolate this Christmas. Spotted at Coles and Woolworths.

Allergens: Milk, soy. May contain: Peanuts, tree nuts.

Mint baubles

I will be searching far and wide for these, I absolutely love mint and chocolate together (preferably dark choc). It looks like these are exclusive to Coles as I haven’t seen them on the Woolies website. This week (9 November) they are on sale for $2.50 (usually $4.50).

I have already bought a bag and can confirm they are absolutely delicious, I think better than the peppermint eggs as there is more minty filling in the round shape.

Allergens: Milk, soy. May contain: Peanuts, tree nuts.

I bought these in Dec 2022 and was eating them until July 2023!

Caramello baubles

For those who miss Caramello Koalas throughout the year, now is the time to stock up! There’s no may contain for wheat on these so you are good to go! Spotted at Coles and Woolworths.

Allergens: Milk, soy. May contain: Peanuts, tree nuts.

Mixed baubles

This big 651g bag brings together three of the bauble flavours, diary milk, caramello and caramilk. Note the ingredients list is longer as it lists each type separately – look at the photos above if you’re having trouble seeing it clearly.

Allergens: Milk, soy. May contain: Peanuts, tree nuts.

Old Gold Almonds

Available at Coles and Woolworths.

Allergens: Almond, milk, soy. May contain: Peanuts, tree nuts.

Old Gold Peanut and Honeycomb

I’ve already bought and tested these – they are delicious! I’m not usually a honeycomb fan but combined with dark chocolate it’s so good. So far I’ve only seen these at Woolworths, so they may be an exclusive.

Allergens: Peanuts, milk, soy. May contain: Tree nuts.

You can also buy milk chocolate peanuts and milk chocolate sultanas (separately). I only just realised I haven’t put up photos but I’ll do it – other stores to put up first!

Marshmallow Santa

Oddly the Cadbury website is out of date and lists wheat as a may contain, however I have seen this in person in September and can confirm this isn’t the case.

Spotted in Coles, Priceline, Woolworths and Big W.

Allergens: Milk. May contain: Peanuts, tree nuts

Chocolate Santa

Just spotted in 2023, Cadbury chocolate Santa! I first came across this on Big W and zooming in to the ingredients online it is indeed GF by ingredient, woohoo!

Allergens: Milk, soy. May contain: Peanut, tree nuts.

Cadbury hollow santa and ingredients label to show it is gluten free.

Candy canes

Coles

So far I’ve just come across the one candy cane at Coles. It has a may contain for milk and soy. But otherwise, vegan.

Candy canes

Kmart has quite a big variety of candy canes and as you’d expect they are gluten free. I had to double check but yes maltose syrup is gluten free – like glucose syrup it’s a simple sugar whereas gluten is a complex protein. These are all dairy free and vegan.

Nil allergens, nil may contain.

There’s also a giant candy cane you can get from Kmart for $2.

Chocolate coins

It’s not Christmas without chocolate coins, so it’s great there are some that are coeliac-safe.

Allergens: Milk, soy. May contain: Tree nuts.

Get them from Big W.

Reindeer noses

Cute little chocolates with a sweet filling. A perfect little stocking stuffer for just over two dollars.

Allergens: Milk, soy. May contain: Tree nuts.

David Jones

DJs has given us a few good slices and puddings for Christmas, but only a few other items that are gluten free. I came across these neat chocolate coated nougat domes made Bramble & Hedge. They are labelled gluten free on the back so you are good to go! Loads of varieties in the store and beautifully decorated.

Ferrero Rocher

Yes! There’s a gluten free Ferrero Rocher and it makes an appearance at Christmas and Easter times. While it’s not exactly a Ferrero, that’s the part that makes it gluten free – no wafers! Instead it’s a big ball of Ferrero chocolate studded with pieces of hazelnut. I spotted this one in Kmart in December 2022 and I can see they are also on sale at Big W. Do note, the allergen listings online are not correct – this is gluten free. It retails for $10 but I’ve seen it on special for $8.

Allergens: Milk, hazelnut, soy.

Gingerbread folk

Gingerbread folk are actually in a few stores this year. At Easter I only saw them in IGA but so far I’ve see their items in Woolworths and Myer.

Gingerbread Christmas Minis

This 200g box of gingerbread biscuits is gluten free, dairy free, vegan, nut free and palm oil free. It’s also Coeliac Australia endorsed. Spotted in Woolies too!

Allergens: Nil.

Gingerbread house kit

I honestly did not think I would see a gluten free, dairy free gingerbread house kit in Australia. It was so rare to find one in the UK (it’s difficult, but possible) so it’s great to see Gingerbread Folk looking out for us Aussie coeliacs and GF peeps. It is vegan, dairy free and nut free.

The pieces are ready baked so it’s just a matter of using the icing (included) to assemble and then decorate with gluten free lollies.

The kit is $39.99 – so far I’ve just seen it at Myer but I’ll update with more locations as I come across them. Mid November I spotted it in my local Woolworths – literally put out that day so no price tag!

Allergens: Soy.

Haighs

Haighs is a wonderful Aussie brand out of South Australia producing artisan chocolates. They have stores across the country and an excellent online store. Most of their Christmas chocolate is gluten free, they are clearly labelled and you can also filter it on their website. I’ve included the speciality Christmas items, if you want more general chocolates then explore their range online.

I’ve included a quick list of what is gluten free just for Christmas

  • Burnt fig frogs
  • Dark orange frogs
  • Raspberry pastilles
  • Spiced chocolate almonds
  • Dark chocolate passionfruit pastilles
  • Christmas pudding brandy truffles (so cute!)
  • Chocolate baubles (milk or dark)
  • Milk chocolate Santa ($2.50)
  • Pistachio and cherry nougat in milk chocolate

There are also loads of their regular range in different sizes of gift boxes and multipacks.

Jelly Belly

A big ol’ gift box with 20 flavours of Jelly Belly beans (250g). Jelly Belly are always gluten free. In addition they are vegetarian friendly, peanut, fat and dairy free.

Ho Ho Ho gift box

Jelly Belly has a small set of jelly beans in Christmas colours. Jelly Belly are always gluten free, including this set which contains the following flavours: candy cane, coconut, green apple, very cherry and red apple. Dairy free and vegan. $14.99

Allergens: Nil.

Kinder

Kinder Mini Friends

Ok if you’d asked me October 2023 if I wanted to eat Kinder chocolate I would have likely said no. But November 2023 I discovered a new Kinder product and it’s secretly gluten free!

Kinder mini friends are these teeny (tiny!) little wrapped chocolates with the typical white filling. They have two varieties, plain and… wait for it … biscuit crumbs!

I have already bought a packet and they are really tasty and there’s a proper crunch from the biscuit pieces that are made with corn starch.

<
  • Kinder mini friends, 128g Allergen: Milk, soy. May contain: Hazelnuts.
  • Biscuit crumb Kinder mini friends, 128g Allergen: Milk, soy. May contain: Hazelnuts.

You can buy these at Coles, Woolworths and Big W.

Christmas Figures

Each of these are 35g and cost about $2. I spotted these at Target but I’m sure they are at the supermarkets too.

Allergens: Milk and soy.

Kinder Santa

A 75g Santa by Kinder Surprise, this one actually has a toy inside! Also, clearly the favourite chocolate of children around the world. Available at Kmart and Coles.

Allergens: Milk and soy.

Kinder Christmas Friends

3 x 15g mini Santa and friends. These are available at Big W and also Target, they are likely in other stores as well. The same chocolates also come in a packet of six (seen at Big W).

Allergens: Milk and soy.

Kinder Chocolate 1/2 meter

I popped into Coles November 2023 and saw a new Christmas item. It’s Kinder bars (the same little ones you can get throughout the year) but stacked in a long box 50 centimeters long!

Allergens: Milk and soy.

Kit Kat

Yes, you read correctly, there is one gluten free KitKat item available in Australia just for Christmas! The reason these are gluten free is because they are made in Italy. So be warned – regular KitKat Santas are not gluten free in Australia. Only these packets below are gluten free and nothing else.

The pack on the left was Christmas 2022, the pack on the right is Christmas 2023. It’s just a bit smaller.

These mini KitKat Santas are gluten free by ingredient and no may contains for wheat / gluten.

Allergens: Milk. May contain: Tree nuts.

In the UK and Europe these are actually labelled gluten free on the back. However I think they don’t do that here as it would require Australian testing to be able to do it. But rest assured, it’s gluten free and super tasty!

They are available from The Reject Shop in Australia. You can also get a mega 1.1 kilogram box of these Santas at Costco!

Lindt

Sadly not many items available gluten free from Lindt around Christmas time. You can still get a few nice items that don’t contain barley malt. Most dark Lindt blocks are GF by ingredient (not the new fig one, that has biscuit pieces).

  • Strawberries and cream Lindor (Lindt balls) Edit: These used to be GF by ingredient until May 2024, they now have a may contain for barley, gluten.

Mentos and Chupa Chups

The Mentos stocking is gluten free and almost entirely dairy free – the mini chupa chups may contain milk.

Because there are so many types inside the ingredients are impossible to read – check it here.

These cute stocking stuffers have either Mentos or Chupa Chups inside.

Get them from Woolies and Kmart.

Moo Free

Dairy free folk rejoice, Moo Free is back with all their limited edition Christmas items. As always, they are harder to find, so best to head to your local vegan grocer or visit an online specialty store like Happy Tummies*.

Christmas selection box, 80g

This pack comes with four different chocolates including a white and also a fizzy orange chocolate! Spotted at LaManna for $11.50.

May contain: Nuts.

White chocolates

Moo Free do a few different white chocolates – very important if you’ve got a dairy free kiddo. Legit dairy free and vegan, same as above the only may contain is nuts. Choccy snowball was at LaManna $8.

Milk chocolates

I learn so much about these brands when I make this mega lists. These are also soy free and palm oil free. May contain nuts same as above. Spotted at LaManna for $10.

Orange choccy bauble

There’s no escaping orange chocolate at Christmas, even if you are dairy free. May contain nuts. I’ve seen this online at GF Pantry and Sunnybrook Health Store.

Nomo reindeer

Yay! I saw these that these were in store in the UK way back in September / October so it was such a shock to see them at my local Woolworths! They are also available at Big W and speciality stores like Happy Tummies*. They are of course dairy free, vegan and also nut free.

NOMO reindeer packaging and written out ingredients to show it is free from all allergens.

Myer

Myer has some fun items but it is a bit of a slog to go through their website. Nevertheless, I have done this and can tell you with confidence what is available.

Baileys Chocolate Truffles

I think this will go on the hint list to my husband for my Christmas stocking. I’m listing may contain for nuts because I saw this on their tube packet at Coles. You can get this packet below at Myer and also at Kmart (Both about $10). If you’re in Melbourne I’ve found big tubes of these at Cheaper Buy Miles.

Allergens: Milk, soy. May contain: Nuts.

Hot chocolate bombs

These come in a packet of three, you simply drop the chocolate ball into hot milk and watch it dissolve into a luxury hot chocolate before your eyes. See the Myer site for full ingredients.

Allergens: Milk, soy.

Sorry you’ll have to turn your head – this photo was too long to put upright.

Springhill Farm

From what I’ve seen most of Springhill Farm is gluten free and vegan, making it a great option for a lot of folks. Although it’s vegan, there is a may contain for dairy and egg on a lot of their items so it isn’t suitable for those with allergy.

Last year they had three flavours all sold separately, this year they are offering just the two.

  • Sour Cherry & Dark Choc Christmas Slice. Allergens: Soy. May contain: Milk, egg, sesame, peanut, tree nuts.

Sour cherries, dark couverture chocolate, rich cocoa, biscuit pieces and a hint of coconut. I thought this would be right up my alley, but I actually really didn’t like it!

  • Raspberry & Meringue slice. May contain: Milk, egg, soy, sesame, peanut, tree nuts.

Get it from their online store. Last year they were also sold at Myer but I haven’t seen them on the website.

Quality Street

To be clear, Quality Street chocolates are available at just about every store. Woolworths, Kmart, Big W, Coles, IGA. Prices vary massively – from $12.50 to $30 for the same 629g tub. Kmart was by far the cheapest at $12.50 but you can get it closer to $14 when on sale at stores like Woolworths.

Allergens: Milk, hazelnut. May contain: Peanuts, other nuts.

Get it from Woolworths, Big W, IGA.

Sweet William

Just the one Sweet William Christmas chocolate a multi pack of chocolate Santas that are nut, gluten and dairy free. It is available in Coles, Woolworths, Target, Big W and selected IGA stores.

Allergens: Soy.

Target

Target is so fun for Christmas exclusives, not to mention their mega range of jams and hot sauces that only exist at this time of year.

Elf on the Shelf

Hot chocolate bomb

Elf on the Shelf hot chocolate bomb (35g) for making decadent hot chocolates. $4 from Target and made by Park Avenue. For the uninitiated a hot chocolate bomb is a hollow chocolate ball filled with marshmallows that you add to warmed milk and watch it melt into a delicious hot chocolate.

Allergens: Milk and soy
May contain: Peanuts, hazelnuts and almond

Get them from: Target.

Chocolate pop

Elf on the Shelf chocolate pop 25g made of Belgian milk chocolate, available at Target. This is by Park Avenue who are excellent when it comes to may contains for wheat – it just doesn’t happen. I’ll get a photo of the back as soon as possible.

Allergens: Milk and soy
May contain: Peanuts, tree nuts

Get them from: Target.

Barbie and Minions Jelly Beans Stocking

Barbie Christmas stocking comes with 200g of jelly beans. Great if you’re not into chocolate or if you’re allergic! I’ve see this one at Target which is where I got the photo of the ingredients. It’s also available in Minions design with the same ingredients. I’ve also seen Paw Patrol at Big W.

Allergens: Nil. May contain: Nil

Get them from: Target.

Santa Sour Stocking

This sour stocking is packed with 245g of about nine different lollies! The allergen list isn’t online and I can see why – it’s huge. There are separate ingredients for every item. I’ve seen it in store and it is gluten free. Soy was the only allergen and even then it was only in two or three of the items.

Allergens: Soy. May contain: Nil

Get them from: Target.

Terry’s

If you’ve missed Terry’s Chocolate Orange (it’s a may contain for wheat) then get searching IGA stores for these Terry’s choc orange snowballs. They’re from the UK, I remember my colleagues bringing these to the office at Christmas time. They are GF by ingredient.

Toblerone

Toblerone

Thankfully Toblerone are gluten free and also widely available across the country in both supermarkets and stores like Target and Kmart.

Allergens: Egg, milk, almonds, soy

Toblerone orange

Taste sensation or abomination? Orange chocolate certainly divides people. Well, I can tell you I will not be tying this! It’s available at Woolworths, Coles and other retailers.

Allergens: Egg, milk, sulphites, almonds, soy

Toblerone chocolate packaging for christmas edition orange flavour. Ingredients show it is gluten free.

Toblerone Golden Caramel

A new player has emerged! Following on the Caramilk trend we’ve now got a golden Toblerone. Like the rest it is gluten free – in fact the allergens are the same as the others. It looks to be a festive season release and currently it appears to be exclusive to Woolworths and Big W.

Allergens: Egg, milk, almonds, soy

Golden toblerone packaging including the back that lists ingredients

Walkers dark chocolate Mint sticks

This box has what is possibly the worst ingredients to share on my website. On top of that the Target ingredients and allergens list is incorrect. Thankfully I snapped a photo in store so you can see the allergens clearly. If you want the full ingredients list have a look at this UK website I found.

Allergens: Milk, soy. May contain: Peanuts, tree nuts.

Walkers mint sticks packaging and ingredients

Get them from: Target.

Woolworths

Though I’ve got a lot of Woolworths items on my gluten free Christmas food list I do need a separate area for exclusive chocolates and lollies.

Candy canes

As you’d expect these candy canes are gluten free. They are also dairy free and vegan with no allergens or may contains.

3D Gummy Block House

So… it’s Lego, but it’s lollies… and it’s gluten free?! Hell yes! I spotted this in Woolworths mid-November 2022 and I was so excited I bought it immediately (it helped that it was on special). Unfortunately it contains pork gelatine so it’s not vegetarian or halal. But otherwise it’s quite good for dietary needs. Note: the Woolworths website doesn’t list the may contain for soy.

Allergens: Sulphites. May contain: Milk, soy.

Be sure to use the share links below and get this out to your gluten free friends and family! If you’re looking for more Christmas content check out the supermarket food guide, where to get the best gluten free gravy powders and of course your perfect advent calendar.
